About

Rohit Mittal, M.D., is the Pediatric Burn Director in the South Carolina Pediatric Burn Center, based at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. An expert in burn and reconstructive surgery for children, Dr. Mittal is the Shriners Endowed Professorship in Pediatric Burn Care at MUSC. Dr. Mittal is double board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. He treats pediatric burn patients and augments the team at MUSC in their current efforts to perform innovative research that improves quality of care and the lives of burned children. Dr. Mittal also cares for adult patients on the Trauma/Burn Service.





Dr. Mittal earned his undergraduate degree and medical degree at Emory University. He then completed General Surgery Residency at Emory. Dr. Mittal pursued additional professional training by completing a Burn/Critical Fellowship, as well as a Burn/Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship, at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he cared for critically ill burn patients

A published author and researcher, his research focus is on tracking and improving quality and clinical outcomes for burn patients as well as to improve the delivery and quality of burn reconstructive surgery services including laser services. He is passionate about providing the highest quality burn care to his patients so they can get back living their lives and doing the things they love most.

About

Dr. Steven Kahn is the Chief of Burn Surgery at MUSC. He led the team that established the South Carolina Burn Center at MUSC, which opened in 2020. The South Carolina Burn Center cares for patients of all ages and is the only inpatient burn center in the state of South Carolina. Dr. Kahn is regarded as an expert and a national leader in both pediatric and adult burn care. He served on the Board of Trustees of the American Burn Association (ABA) from 2021-2025 and as the ABA Program Committee Chair from 2022-2025. Kahn trained at the University of Rochester for general surgery residency and a 2-yr research fellowship, followed by additional clinical fellowships at Vanderbilt in burn surgery, critical care, and trauma/acute care surgery. He is board certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care.





Dr. Kahn has provided care to thousands of burn patients and has performed over 3000 operations to treat burn injury (including but not limited to skin grafts, skin substitutes, skin flaps, scar revision, and regenerative medicine techniques). Dr. Kahn has also been a leader in developing minimally invasive burn treatments, laser scar therapy, paradigms for enhanced recovery after burn injury, and fluid restrictive resuscitation strategies.





Kahn's main research interests are centered around firefighter safety, burn resuscitation, health economics, smoke inhalation injury, non-opiate pain control, wound healing, regenerative medicine, and burn reconstruction. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and has received numerous research awards and significant grant funding for his work. He speaks nationally and internationally regarding these topics.

He is an advocate for firefighter safety and serves as medical advisor for The South Carolina Association of Professional Fire Fighters and the International Association of Fire Fighters. Dr. Kahn participated in the development of FEMA-funded firefighter safety programs such as "It Happened in Seconds," regarding situational awareness, gear limitations, and burn injury awareness- and helped with drafting the South Carolina Firefighter's Cancer Bill.





Before moving to Charleston, Kahn received the Nashville Business Journal "Healthcare Heroes" Award in 2015 for his work regarding firefighter safety, followed by the Mobile Bay "40 Under 40 Award" in 2016. In 2022, he received the Charleston Health Care Heroes Award for his work in building the South Carolina Burn Center. In his free time, Kahn enjoys spending time with his wife and two children; he is also an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.

Dr. Adria Johnson is a surgeon at the South Carolina Burn Center and is double board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. She treats both pediatric and adult burn patients between the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and MUSC University Hospital.





Dr. Johnson grew up in Fargo, North Dakota and obtained her undergraduate degrees and medical degree at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. She completed general surgery residency in Portland, Maine at Maine Medical Center where she was inspired to further subspecialize in burn surgery and surgical critical care. She then completed a burn/critical care fellowship in Galveston, Texas at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Children's Texas. In fellowship, Dr. Johnson obtained additional training in managing adult burn patients at the Blocker Burn Unit and significantly expanded her breadth of experience in the care of pediatric burn survivors at the Shriners' Hospital. It was this emphasis on the multidisciplinary, surgical, and compassionate care of all ages of burn patients that then brought her to the South Carolina Burn Center.





Dr. Johnson is also an assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in addition to her position with the burn center and is passionate about surgical education and research.
