Dennis Delany, MD

Dr. Dennis Delany is an assistant professor of pediatrics. He specializes in pediatric cardiology and pediatric cardiac critical care medicine. He has clinical and research interests in evaluation and treatment of neonatal critical heart disease and education.
Dr. Delany graduated medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. He then completed his pediatric residency, pediatric cardiology fellowship, and additional training in pediatric cardiac critical care medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Prior to working at MUSC, he was faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, where he was the Associate Program Director of the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.

Heather Adame, PhD

Dr. Heather Adame is a Pediatric Psychologist, who works with children, teens, and families seen in Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Adame grew up in Montana and traveled across the United States for special training in helping families manage mental health challenges that can happen when a child is sick. She received her PhD in Counseling Psychology from The University of North Dakota. She completed her Internship at Nationwide Children's Hospital. She completed her Fellowship at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, NC before settling in beautiful Charleston, SC with her family.
When children and teens experience a heart condition, it doesn't only affect their physical health. It also impacts their emotional, academic, and behavioral well-being. As a Pediatric Cardiac Psychologist, it is her privilege to work with families to manage the stress and challenges of living with a heart condition. This can include working together to learn coping skills, manage pain differently, and build emotional strength. Dr. Adame also assesses mental health concerns that may arise during treatment, or a hospital stay. As a member of the Pediatric Cardiology team, Dr. Adame helps to provide holistic treatment for each patient she sees. Dr. Adame's research interests include improving health outcomes and rural healthcare.

Molly Ann Short is a pediatric nurse practitioner in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) at Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. She earned her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in pediatric primary care from The Medical University of South Carolina in 2023. She is board certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, she worked as a nurse in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at MUSC for over seven years, where she found her passion for pediatric cardiology. Molly loves building relationships with patients and their families through education and support while in the cardiac intensive care unit.

Rachel Friend, DNP, FNP-BC is a board-certified family nurse practitioner specializing in pediatric cardiology at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2023. She has been part of the pediatric cardiology team since graduating with her BSN from the University of Virginia in 2019. She is passionate about education and loves all the new learning and teaching experiences the Heart Center has to offer. She loves being part of the Heart Center team and serving its special patient population.

Matteo Trezzi, MD
Pediatric Cardiothoracic SurgeryAbout
Dr. Matteo Trezzi is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in congenital heart surgery. Born in Milan, Italy, Dr. Trezzi graduated from medical school at the University of Milan. He completed his post-graduate training in cardiac surgery from the same institution. Later, he acquired his 3-year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (Cleveland, OH). Additionally, he completed a 2-year fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC). He was then recruited as an attending surgeon at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital of Rome (Italy) at the Holy See.
Dr. Trezzi's clinical interests include neonatal and infant heart surgery, hybrid interventions, high-risk reoperations, adult congenital surgery, tracheal surgery, and heart/lung transplantation. Specifically, he has accumulated a valuable experience in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), durable mechanical circulatory support devices, correction of anomalies of the pulmonary venous return, and aortic arch surgery. Dr. Trezzi has given presentations at various national and regional meetings. Also, he has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Furthermore, his research activities include pediatric heart failure, evaluation of new mechanical circulatory support devices, percutaneous devices for right ventricular failure, heart valve repair and replacement, introduction in clinical practice of new organ preservation systems for transplantation, and outcomes improvement.
He considers himself extremely fortunate and blessed to continue this work at MUSC. Besides his professional engagements, Dr. Trezzi enjoys spending time with his lovely wife and two beautiful kids - an active family that loves the outdoors.
