About

Robert F. Murphy, M.D. is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at MUSC specializing in the care of musculoskeletal conditions in children and adolescents.





Dr. Murphy's expertise is in pediatric and adolescent spinal conditions and deformity, pediatric and adolescent hip dysplasia and hip conditions, as well as lower extremity and foot deformities in children. He also treats children with sprains, strains, injuries, and fractures.





A native Midwesterner, Dr. Murphy graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2005. His medical degree was obtained from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia in 2009. Following medical school, Dr. Murphy completed his residency at the University of Tennessee \& Campbell Clinic in Memphis. He received a further year of subspecialty training exclusively in pediatric orthopaedics at Boston Children's Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School.





Dr. Murphy is active in clinical research, and participates in several clinical trials regarding scoliosis. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, the Scoliosis Research Society and the Pediatric Spine Study Group.

Dr. Sara Van Nortwick is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with expertise in the treatment of disorders of the spine and extremities. She completed a prestigious pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship at Stanford Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, California and is actively involved in numerous research projects to advance the field of pediatric orthopedics. Scoliosis, hip dysplasia, and fracture care are of special interest to Dr Van Nortwick. The treatment of patients with neuromuscular and congenital differences is especially enjoyable for her secondary to the lifelong relationships that can develop. A relative of Dr Van Nortwick has cerebral palsy and was the impetus for her pursuit of orthopedic surgery. As a former division 1 collegiate athlete, Dr Van Nortwick identifies with the athletic aspirations of her patients. She loves being a mom and counts it a great privilege to be part of your family's life.
